A Love for Origami Planes

Mr Ee Choo Teck may be a retired school teacher in his early 80s, but his craft in the the local paper folding scene continues to delight and inspire people from all walks of life.

It all began in 1999, when Ee was living in Singapore for a year. He visited an airplane exhibition and was fascinated with the models displayed. From there, he went on to fold his very first model, an F16 fighter aircraft. The rest is history, and he has since created over 600 over models of origami planes; including many other creations such as helicopters, ships and fighter jets!

When Ee first moved to Penang in 2000, he would often sell his unique creations on weekend mornings, at a stall on Armenian Street. He would sell about 60 planes a day. In the beginning, he also folded paper planes for his colleagues and they liked them very much. They suggested him to sell his paper art, and so Ee started small by selling them in a few school bazaars. In 2007, he was also selling at the Little Penang Street Market on Upper Penang Road, instantly becoming one of the most popular stalls as his planes naturally attracted many visitors; whom have not seen anything quite like his creations. Eventually in 2016, Ee went on to have his first origami exhibition on the 3rd floor of the Komtar Tower.

Ee has 5 adult children and continues to fold and invent new paper plane models to this day. According to the humble and friendly origami master, he truly finds joy in expressing his creativity through the art of folding paper and aims to continue crafting more paper plane models.
